Short-term rehab and other healthcare professionals take note –
Good home care services are now more important than ever in the light of unwelcome changes in many Medicare Advantage plans.
The medical news site KHN reported that nursing homes say that Medicare Advantage plans are increasingly ending members’ coverage for nursing home and rehabilitation services before patients are healthy enough to go home.
Insurance companies, such as UnitedHealthcare use industry-wide data about patients to determine when they are able to be discharged, the website said. The insurers thus make a higher profit.
But nursing homes and advocates for residents say that these decisions are made by people who never see the patients.
These changes do not affect traditional Medicare plans, however.
If patients with Medicare Advantage cannot pay thousands of dollars for a longer stay in rehab, good quality home care is essential.
